Envoy Travelogue: The Italian Riviera

The Italian Riviera

The Italian Riviera has to been seen, smelled, experienced, and tasted to be believed.

The Italian part of the fabled Riviera is located near the top of northwestern Italy's boot shape. The Riviera is a band of land on the Mediterranean coast, extending from the town of Hyeres in France, through Montecarlo in Monaco, to the town of La Spezia in Italy.
The towns of the Riviera, with their pastel houses and lush almost-tropical gardens, extend along a road that has existed since ancient Roman times––although it has been rebuilt many times and is now a modern highway. A railroad also serves this area.

The Riviera's Cinque Terre
The Cinque Terre (pronounced CHINK-WAH-TERRAHH) is composed of five very small villages, literally encrusted in the cliffs above the Mediterranean Sea. The villages, accessible mainly by train or by foot, are bright with color, and their cliffside setting is overwhelmingly beautiful.

Hiking is heavenly in the Cinque Terre. Hikes vary from an easy 30 minute stroll from the village of Riomaggiore to Manarola (the Lover’s Walk) to the marathon multi-hour trek from the village of Vernazza to Monterosso al Mare (or vice versa). And each town has its own personality. Monterosso al Mare has several hotels and a beach; Vernazza has an enchanting harbor vista; and at captivating Manorola you can literally sunbathe on the rocks.

Though no longer off the beaten track, these Cinque Terre villages do not get the tourist mobs you might find in Venice or Florence. There is not a whole lot to do here except relax, sip the local wine, watch the fisher-people bring in the local catch, twirl some spaghetti, and make the passagietta (stroll).

Finding a place to stay
Accommodations in the Cinque Terre are somewhat limited. It's a good idea to make one of the five towns your base. Or you may want to settle into a more developed Riviera resort area. Local trains run hourly, and there are also very convenient connections from Genoa, Pisa, and even Florence.

The Riviera by boat
As you may imagine, the Italian Riviera is a great area to explore by boat. There are excursions all along the coast.

In the summer, there are excursions from Santa Margherita Ligure to the Cinque Terre. There are several other choices, including a trip to the less touristy fishing village of Camogli (pronounced Cah-moh-lee!). In essence, a Riviera boating excursion can become a holiday within a holiday.
